Privacy policy
What we collect, why, and who else sees it. The short version: very little, and we never sell it.
The short version
- Advertising
- None. I don’t run ads.
- Selling data
- Never.
- Analytics
- Counted on my own server. Nothing is sent to Google or Meta.
- Accounts
- There aren’t any. You can read everything without signing up.
Who I am
KOAlil (koalil.com) is an independent Japan travel site run by a small team of editors in Japan. If you have a question about this policy, use my contact page.
What I collect, and why
When you read
Like every website, my host keeps standard server logs: IP address, browser, the page requested and the time. They are used for security and fixing problems.
I count visits with Burst Statistics, an analytics tool that runs on my own server. The numbers stay with me. I use them to see which articles are read, not who reads them.
When you send me a message
The contact form sends your name, email address and message to my inbox. I use them only to reply, and I don’t add you to any mailing list.
When you leave a comment
WordPress stores the name, email address and comment you enter, plus your IP address and browser, to help catch spam. Your email address is never shown. If you have a Gravatar, a coded version of your email address is sent to Gravatar (run by Automattic) to show your profile picture.
Settings on your device
If you switch to dark mode or fold away the contents panel, your browser remembers that choice in its own storage. It never leaves your device. If you comment, WordPress may set cookies so you don’t have to type your name again.
Other companies involved
- Google Fonts. My typefaces load from Google’s servers, which can see your IP address when they do.
- Klook. Some links in Before you land go to Klook with my affiliate ID. If you click one, Klook may use cookies to record that you came from me. What happens on Klook is covered by Klook’s own privacy policy.
- My web host, ConoHa WING, runs the servers this site lives on.
Your choices
You can ask me what I hold about you, or ask me to correct or delete it, through the contact page. You can also block or clear cookies in your browser. The site works fine without them.
The law I follow
I handle personal information in line with Japan’s Act on the Protection of Personal Information.
Changes
If I change how I handle data, I’ll update this page and the date at the top.
